Nearly two centuries of chocolate history
The historic Fargas chocolate shop embarks on a new chapter led by Lluc Crusellas, winner of the 2022 World Chocolate Masters and founder of Eukarya. The project pairs the continuity of an establishment with nearly two centuries of history with the arrival of a new generation of artisanal chocolate-making in Barcelona.
Fargas, Barcelona’s chocolate heritage
03/11/26
The history of Fargas dates back to 1827, when there is already documentary evidence of a master chocolatier at Plaça de la Cucurulla. In 1887, Josep Fargas took charge of the business, giving it the name it carries today. For decades, the house crafted chocolates and custom recipes for some of Barcelona’s most prominent families.
In 2016, the chocolate shop moved to its current location at number 16 Carrer del Pi, after occupying an emblematic space at Plaça de la Cucurulla for many years. The relocation allowed for the preservation of historical elements such as the furniture, the display windows, and the stone mill, which continue to form part of the establishment’s identity.
Business continuity now arrives with the handover to Lluc Crusellas, following the previous owners’ search for someone to safeguard the house’s legacy. For the chocolatier, taking on this responsibility is also a way of giving back to the sector that has given him so much.
Eukarya adds a new chapter in Barcelona
Through this operation, Eukarya, the chocolate brand founded by Crusellas alongside his partner Josep Novellas, incorporates Barcelona into its retail points, following the shops in Vic and Andorra. Production remains at the Vic workshop, where they work with quality cocoa sourced from diverse origins.
The incorporation of Fargas represents an opportunity to enter Barcelona without severing ties to the city’s chocolate history. The project retains the house’s name and heritage elements while introducing Eukarya’s creations. The renovation also incorporates a workshop area visible directly from the shop.
Crusellas, trained at Espai Sucre and Escuela Hofmann, won the World Chocolate Masters in 2022. In 2026, he also joined Relais Desserts, the premier international association for high-end pastry. His arrival at Fargas thus expands the brand’s presence in one of Barcelona’s premier historical chocolate enclaves.
Stone-ground chocolate and new creations
The proposal maintains some of Fargas’s most representative products, especially the stone-ground chocolate, which will continue to be produced using the shop’s antique mill. It will also feature truffles, marron-glacé, and a selection of traditional bonbons.
Eukarya will contribute its chocolate bars, pralines, and turrones, alongside new proposals such as traditional suizos and hot chocolate with sponge fingers (melindros) to take away. The shop will not function as a sit-down café, but it will offer customized tastings for small groups, designed to bring consumers closer to understanding cocoa, its origins, percentages, and roast profiles.
Fargas’s new era thus proposes a coexistence between heritage and innovation, driven by the desire to preserve a piece of Barcelona’s chocolate memory and introduce a fresh perspective on artisanal chocolate-making.
Gourmenials Signature
The continuity of Fargas is brilliant news for Barcelona’s gastronomic heritage. The inclusion of Lluc Crusellas keeps a historic establishment vibrantly alive while introducing the public to a new generation of artisan chocolate-making.
