Smoke, Black Cherry, and Mountain Herbs
06/31/26
🍷Les Manyes 2021 displays a ruby-red hue. On the nose, it unfolds a complex symphony of smoke and stone, black cherry, and mountain herbs. The palate reveals vibrant fruit, freshness, and a precise tannic structure. A subtle, delicate bitterness on the finish brings tension and lengthens the wine’s journey.
Luis Gutiérrez, writing for The Wine Advocate, describes the vintage as a wine that is still young and somewhat closed during its first moments in the glass. With time and air, notes of violets and wild plants emerge, alongside a juicy, fresh, and elegant expression. James Suckling highlights aromas of white pepper, blood orange, dried herbs, and forest floor. Tim Atkin underlines notes of wild strawberries, rose petals, aromatic herbs, and crushed rock
🥂🍽️At the table, it pairs exquisitely with red meats, game, poultry, and cured meats. It also harmonizes beautifully with seasonal Catalan cuisine and traditional mountain recipes.
Freshness, 13.5% ABV, and Served at 16 ºC
Les Manyes 2021 has an alcohol content of 13.5% and is best served at 16 ºC. Its moderate alcohol level contributes to a balanced, harmonious profile that reinforces its culinary appeal. The wine’s freshness and structure allow it to accompany dishes seamlessly, elevating the ingredients without overpowering them.
Production for the 2021 vintage reached approximately 3,500 bottles, according to the winery’s technical specs. The 2024 harvest, by contrast, was far more scarce. Luis Gutiérrez notes that yield dropped roughly by half starting in 2023. As a result of a warm and dry vintage, only 1,578 bottles of Les Manyes 2024 were produced.
🍾⭐️Gourmenials Recommendation: It is well worth seeking out for its remarkable ability to express a mountain Priorat through freshness, precision, and place-driven character. It is a wine that encapsulates the core philosophy of Terroir al Límit, centered on elegance and landscape identity.
The 2024 vintage reached 100 Parker points—a milestone score that belongs exclusively to that specific harvest. This recognition cements the standing of Les Manyes among the legendary wines of Priorat.
A High-Altitude Vineyard on Clay Soils
Les Manyes originates from a parcel situated high above Scala Dei, in the Montsant range and close to Mas Deu.
The vineyard sits at an altitude of 800 meters, faces west, and is planted on clay soils. The vines are approximately 60 years old. This distinct soil composition sets the site apart from other areas of Priorat traditionally dominated by slate (llicorella).
The variety is 100% Garnacha Peluda (“Hairy Grenache”), a natural mutation of Garnacha Tinta characterized by fine downy fuzz on the underside of its leaves. This feature helps the vine retain moisture during warm stretches. Additionally, the variety naturally accumulates less sugar, favoring a more restrained alcohol level.
The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented using whole clusters. Afterwards, the wine ages for eight months in concrete tanks. Dominik A. Huber champions an approach to winemaking rooted in freshness, transparency, elegance, drinkability, and gastronomic affinity. The winemaker emphasizes that his goal is to create wines capable of pairing seamlessly with Catalan cuisine, a culinary tradition for which he holds deep admiration.
