Can Lleó: Tradition and Penedès Essence
Can Lleó: Winemaking tradition since the 18th century
In Sant Martí Sarroca, the Lleó family is breathing new life into a winery dating back to 1751. With organic vineyards, manual harvesting, and artisanal production, this project connects territory and memory with a contemporary vision.
A Family Winery Reclaiming the Soul of Penedès
Barcelona/Newsroom, January 14, 2026
The Can Lleó estate dates back to 1751. Located in Sant Martí Sarroca, it preserves an 18th-century farmhouse and winery alongside the Chapel of Mare de Déu del Roser. In 2022, the Lleó family renovated the facilities, carefully preserving original elements while updating machinery to recover traditional winemaking methods.
The project focuses on six wines crafted from indigenous varieties: Macabeu, Parellada, and Black Grenache. All vineyards are organic, and the harvest is done by hand in 15-kilogram crates. Everything from vinification to bottling takes place on the property, ensuring total control and revealing the character of the land without artifice.
The Team: Committed Viticulture and Craft
Current owners Alberto and Judith Lleó drive this project, blending family tradition with an innovative outlook.
Winemaker Aina Mariné, trained at URV with experience in Montsant and South Africa, leads the production alongside technical director Joan Asens, who brings the precision needed to preserve the wines’ authenticity. The team is supported by dedicated viticulturists: Joan Bonfill, a pillar of family tradition; Alfred Vert, caretaker of the old Macabeu vines at Les Pedres; Jordi Torrell, responsible for the emblematic Parellada plots; and Dani Figueras, who tends to the Black Grenache. Additionally, the Carbó-Santacana family has spent decades caring for Vinya Meix, a bush-vine Macabeu plot that produces a unique single-parcel skin-contact wine.
