A family legacy since 1900
The story of Can Mateu begins around 1900, when Mateu Bataller ran a butcher’s shop in Les Preses (La Garrotxa). Over time, the family expanded the business, and before the Spanish Civil War, his grandsons were already producing and distributing cured meats. Despite historical challenges, the company grew stronger, eventually becoming a benchmark in traditional fuets and sausages.
The soul of artisan ham
The creation of the Pernils Can Mateu brand marked a commitment to preserving the old ways of making mountain ham. Each ham is salted and coated by hand, then left to cure slowly for an average of two years or more. The result is a product with low salt content, exceptional flavor, and a smooth, homogeneous texture rarely found today.

Pernil de Can Mateu is a tradition, a unique, mountain ham like the one that was made in the old farmhouses of La Garrotxa since ancient times and that continues to be an artisan product. Why artisan? Well, because the few processes involved, salting and lard, are done entirely by hand.
